It is Christmas Eve 1680 and the Ridd family at Plovers Barrows Farm on
Exmoor are preparing food and drink for an evening of celebration with
their family and neighbours. Uncle Ben has not yet arrived and his granddaughter
Ruth is worried that he may have been set upon by the villainous Doones
out on the moor. Her cousin John Ridd agrees to go and look for him.
Ruth is secretly in love with John.
Cousin Tom Faggus, a highwayman, arrives with local farmers and their families
for the New Year celebrations at the Ridd Farm.
John returns, bringing in a very dishevelled Ben who has been waylaid by the Doones. He demands that action be taken against these bandits.
